What is an LA Peel?
The LA peel solution is a superficial to mid depth peel comprised
of three different peeling agents in an ethanol base. Each agent acts in
a slightly different manner, making the solution highly effective and
predictable. This peeling agent provides significant visible exfoliation
with minimal complications and is simple to use.
An LA Peel smoothes and rejuvenates sun-damaged skin. It is indicated
for patients with mild to severe acne, melasma, moderate wrinkling, and
actinic damage. Multiple areas can be treated at the same time. Peeling
the face, neck, hands, and upper chest is quite effective. This peeling
agent is excellent for all skin types. Ethnic and darker skin types
should exercise caution and offer the patient a series of light peels.
Adding successive layers to the skin controls the depth or level of the
peel. During a peel, an even layer of the solution is applied and
allowed to dry without neutralizing. The LA peel is self-limiting and is
left on the skin. After the initial layer is dry, a second layer can be
applied to achieve deeper penetration. White milky frosting occurs and
signifies the endpoint for layers added. Even frosting signifies a
uniform, even peel.
How does it work?
The acids in these peels remove dead cells from the surface of the skin
and stimulate new cell growth, making a visible difference to the look
and feel of your skin.
What can a peel be used to treat? LA Peels can improve more difficult problems associated with skin pigmentation, surface lines, and some acne scarring.
Problems on the face, chest, hands and back can be treated with these peels which are suitable for all skin types.
Whats the next step? Your first discussion with our practitioner should clearly set out your
expectations and what the practitioner thinks will happen to your skin
as a result of Peel treatments.
We may recommend that your skin
is primed for at least two weeks before undergoing treatment by using
carefully selected products which could include SkinCeuticals Alpha
Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) or Theraderm preparation kit. This at home
treatment helps to improve the condition of your skin and will alert us
to any sensitivity prior to a peel procedure.
The
actual procedure is straight forward – the skin is usually cleaned and
the selected peel will be applied and left for 5 – 15 minutes on the
area requiring treatment before it is removed.
Most clients find that they can return to work immediately after treatment.
For
optimal results, a course of 3 - 6 treatment sessions (every week or
so) may be recommended depending on your skin’s condition and the peel
used.
Does it hurt and could it go wrong?
The treatment is usually pain free, but you may feel a mild stinging or burning sensation during the peel application.
Complications after a light chemical peel are extremely rare but may include:
Transient redness of the skin “Hot spots” and/or crusting due to deeper penetration in specific areas Hyperpigmentation (mild darkening of areas of the skin) – this normally resolves after a month.
